According to Richard Lazarus, stress is a two-way process; it involves the production of stressors by the environment, and the response of an individual subjected to these stressors. Coping strategies were frequently classified as two types: problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping (Baqutayan, 2015;Folkman & Lazarus, 1980;Lazarus & Folkman, 1984a). An Analysis of Coping in a Middle-Aged Community Sample SUSAN FOLKMAN RIcHARD S. LAZARUS University of California, Berkeley Journal of Health and Social Behavior 1980, Vol. 21 (September):219-239 This study analyzes the ways 100 community-residing men and women aged 45 to 64 coped with the stressful events of daily living during one year. The Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman Model For Stress Developed in 1984, Lazarus stress is defined as an “imbalance between demands and resources.” What the two researchers meant by this was that every person has resources and skills available to them. When talking about stress, these skills are known as coping mechanisms. Lazarus and Folkman defined two major coping categories: 1 is the emotion-focused coping, refers to the regulation of emotions that are cause by the assessment process of others such as anger or sadness of losing someone, anxiety and fear when feeling threaten and eagerness and excitement, mixed with some worry when feeling challenges.

Emotion-focused coping is a type of stress management that attempts to reduce negative emotional responses associated with stress. In his 1966 book, Psychological Stress and the Coping Process (Lazarus, 1966), Richard Lazarus defined stress as a relationship between the person and the environment that is appraised as personally significant and as taxing or exceeding resources for coping. This definition is the foundation of stress and coping theory (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984). Dr. Folkman received her PhD from the University of California at Berkeley in 1979, where she remained as a research psychologist until coming to UCSF in 1988.

Folkman's (1984) cognitive phenomenological model of stress and coping was used to propose ways that these change characteristics influence individuals' appraisal of the uncertainty associated with change, and, ultimately, job satisfaction and turnover intentions. Active coping includes initiating direct action, increasing one's efforts, and trying to execute a coping attempt in stepwise fash- ion.
[5] [6] In this book, they were the first to make the distinction between "problem-focused coping" and "emotion-focused coping" which could result in consequences for both physical and mental health.
